CBD shows promise in treating and assisting a range of different conditions and ailments within the body. Gut health is an integral aspect to overall bodily function as an individual’s ability to properly digest and absorb nutrients ingested can dictate the proper biological performance of other internal processes. CBD seems to exhibit the ability to aid in proper gut health and function in several ways. It is worth looking at how the potent cannabinoid can play a supporting and healing role in internal intestinal health.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is involved in the proper function of many bodily systems and is a vital part of normal gut function. One of the main and most studied benefits of CBD use is its ability to act as a potent anti-inflammatory agent within the body. Inflammation is an underlying symptom to many different problems and conditions and chronic inflammation can lead to serious health issues. The anti-inflammatory effects of CBD make it a potential effective treatment for inflammatory conditions of the gut, such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Evidence suggests that CBD may interact with extra-cannabinoid system receptor sites making the compound the possible basis of a new class of anti-IBD drugs. [1]

In addition to these anti-inflammatory effects, CBD and other major cannabinoids seem to play a role in proper function of the gastrointestinal tract through their interaction with the ECS. Some studies have shown how CBD can increase gut motility and aid with proper digestion. [2] The ECS itself helps to control a variety of different gastrointestinal functions and within the large intestine may interact with the gut microbiome to regulate epithelial barrier permeability. [2] Other research indicates that cannabinoids may also interact within the gut to assist with gut-brain-mediated fat intake and hunger signaling. [2]

Current scientific research is showing a dynamic relationship between gut health and overall physical and mental wellbeing. With CBD displaying several advantages due to the way in which it interacts with the GI system, this research leads towards suggesting that a healthy ECS, supported by the use of CBD and other cannabinoids, may have an important role in full body health.
